| Carved Fresco Detail, Ceiling of Al Faw Palace, Baghdad: Saddam built the Al Faw Palace to commemorate his 1991 victory over Iran, recapturing the port of Al Faw abandoned by the US after Gulf War I. We think of most palaces as ancient artifacts. But to see this new palace, one of almost 50 Saddam built during his reign, drives home the disparity between the 'haves' and 'have-nots' in Iraq. | ||
